The basic concept behind the Fat Burning Furnace theory is that of boosting your metabolism by building lean muscle through short bursts of interval type training. At the beginning of his book, Rob Poulos takes a stance against the typical cardio workout that 95% of the population seems to pursue, and is also perpetrated by various fitness experts and gyms. Poulos states that this method of exercise is not nearly as effective at burning fat quickly as short bursts of intense training – also known as interval training.

The workouts outlined by Poulos center around circuit weight training. Now, don’t let that scare you off. Poulos goes into detail about how this will NOT make you look overly muscled. Being a woman, I know that I want to look fit but I don’t want to look like a bodybuilder. However, as the author points out, that won’t happen that since women don’t have the testosterone required to build muscle. This workout will assist both men and women achieve lean, muscluar physiques.

The theory behind these short interval weight training routines is this: When you lift a weight to 100% (also called muscle failure – the point where you just can’t lift it again) you will cause your body to have to expend quite a bit of energy repairing that muscle. This will take a day or two, and this is why your body will still be burning a lot of calories even a day or two after your workout. (You’re not injuring yourself, just breaking down tissue so it can be rebuilt much stronger the next time.)

Meanwhile, by adding lean muscle you’re also increasing your metabolic rate to the tune of about 50 calories per pound of muscle every hour. This is because your body must work harder to maintain muscle tissue than it does to maintain fat cells. By having more muscle you’ll be burning fat and calories around the clock–even if you’re just sitting around! This is why Poulos claims that your workout routine will help you burn calories for up to 72 hours after your workout and beyond. And it’s true – this is hard scientific fact backed up by quite a bit of research.

The primary focus of the system is on performing a full body workout of specific exercises, but performing them very slowly to maximize the impact they have and concentrating on tiring the muscles out. This also means you only have to do one set of the exercises, unlike the 3 sets most people are encouraged to do, which is what allows you to complete the workouts so quickly.

Exercises are described in detail in the guide, and photos are given to show you what to do, if you upgrade and get the BlowTorch system then you also get over 2 hours of videos of the author performing the BlowTorch routines himself, this is different to the normal routines but does show you how to do some of the exercises covered in the main guide.

The guide has a ‘break in’ routine for those who haven’t exercised in years, then a beginner, intermediate and advanced workout plan that you can work through. The BlowTorch system is like a super advanced workout which allows you to target specific areas of your body, this may be too much for most people and the main guide will give you more than enough to be working on!

The system covers nutrition as well for about 35 pages and discusses what you should be eating to maximize fat loss, why he doesn’t recommend fad diets, and he gives a very simple way to watch what you eat and give your body what it needs. He takes you through lots of common perceptions on nutrition and gives his take on them which made a lot of sense to me (like why you put lots of weight back on after a traditional diet).

You get a sample meal plan for a day and he gives you a site to go to for lots of free recipes you can use.

You also get some planners which you can print out to help track your progress, and some tools like a body fat percentage analyzer which is basic but serves its purpose.

This fitness package is a great overall plan to build a healthy body and boost your cardiovascular health. It’s a very fun concept, especially for those who are tired of boring cardio workouts such as jogging and riding the stationary bike – and most of the time aren’t seeing any results anyway!

This quick guide to fat burning has good photos to demonstrate the exercises, although you might want to pick up a book from the library on how to properly perform all exercises described by Poulos. This was the only area of the book we found a bit lacking. Make sure you’re doing the exercises right to avoid injury.
